Referral income doesn&#8217;t depend on your own queue being full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-red-flag-2-the-mercor-data-breach-and-lawsuits\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red flag #2: The Mercor data breach and lawsuits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one is more serious. Read it before you sign up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late March 2026, Mercor was hit by a supply chain attack through LiteLLM, a widely used open-source tool. Mercor confirmed the breach on March 31. A hacking group later claimed to have around 4TB of Mercor data, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/09\/after-data-breach-10b-valued-startup-mercor-is-having-a-month\">according to TechCrunch<\/a>, including candidate profiles, personal information, source code, and API keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawsuits and public reporting allege the stolen data included Social Security numbers, government IDs, payment information, facial biometric data, and recorded AI video interviews. Five contractors had filed suits within days of the disclosure, and more class actions followed. Some complaints also question how Mercor collected and stored AI interview recordings and biometric data. These are allegations, not court findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercor says it contained the incident and has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercor.com\/blog\/update-on-mercor-security-incident\/\">completed its investigation<\/a> with outside forensics experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two things worth knowing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mercor&#8217;s worker agreement sends disputes to individual arbitration, which limits how contractors can pursue claims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The breach came from a third-party tool that hit thousands of companies, not only Mercor. That doesn&#8217;t make the exposed data any less sensitive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you already work with Mercor:<\/strong> change any reused passwords, turn on two-factor authentication, and keep an eye on your bank and tax accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you&#8217;re about to apply:<\/strong> you&#8217;ll be sharing your face, voice, ID, and banking details.
